This training gives you the skills you need to reach out and provide initial support to youth who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem and help connect them to appropriate care.
Learners will complete a 2-hour, self-paced online course, and participate in a 5.5-hours, instructor-led training via video conference.
The course covers:
- Common signs and symptoms of mental health challenges in this age group, including anxiety, depression, eating disorders and attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD).
- Common signs and symptoms of substance use challenges.
- How to interact with a child or adolescent in crisis.
- How to connect the youth with help.
- Expanded content on trauma, substance use and self-care and the impact of social media and bullying.
Learn how to respon with the Mental Health First Aid Action Plan (ALGEE ):
- Assess for risk of suicide or harm.
- Listen nonjudgmentally.
- Give reassurance and information.
- Encourage appropriate professional help.
- Encourage self-help and other support strategies.
This training is offered by Safe & Sound Hillsborough in partnership with the Children's Board of Hillsborough County. It is FREE and open to the public thanks to a grant provided by Simply Health Foundation.
Participants must be Hillsborough County residents.
